2020 Fireworks Injuries

It happens every year, Ohio experiences a higher volume  Of emergency room visits as people throughout Cincinnati, and the remainder of Ohio sustain firework-related injuries. These injuries can range from mild burns to deaths. Mt. Healthy was one community shaken by the untimely death of a local Navy veteran as a result of a firework accident. 

The call came in during the early hours of July 5th, and emergency responders brought to the home quickly. The victim, Glenn Powell, was a 64-year-old Mt. Healthy resident who was a Navy veteran, Was declared deceased at the scene. He had sustained head injuries from a commercial-grade or professional level mortar firework. The victim's wife had contacted nine-one-one for emergency medical assistance and reported that the victim had lit the firework, and something went wrong. The firework struck the man in the head and caused a substantial amount of damage.

Mountain healthy police confiscated other fireworks from the home and have declared the situation as an accident, but they acknowledged that the wounds were self-inflicted. City leaders use this unfortunate accident to perpetuate the statewide ordinance against firework use. Unfortunately, Mt. Healthy, along with many other communities in Ohio, including Cincinnati, had higher numbers of firework usage then What has been tracked in recent history. Many communities canceled their public fireworks displays in order to reduce the likelihood of large crowds.

Even throughout June, there were high reports of firework-related injuries. One man in Cleveland suffered severe injuries after lighting a firework in June. Many studies are still working on formal reports to identify how many fireworks-related injuries happened during the 2020 4th of July weekend. Reports from last year show that there were about 7,300 injuries reported to US emergency rooms between the end of June and the end of July of 2019.
