Attorney Stephen S. Mazzei

Stephen S. Mazzei

Counsel Emeritus

Serving Ohio, Kentucky, & Indiana For More Than 30 Years

Board Certified Workers’ Compensation Specialist and Social Security lawyer Stephen S. Mazzei is a partner/shareholder of Young, Reverman & Mazzei Co., L.P.A. Steve commits his nearly 40 years of experience to providing exceptional representation to injured and disabled persons throughout Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana (Social Security disability only).

Steve joined the law firm in 1987 and became a partner/shareholder in 1993.

Military service

Steve began his legal career as an active duty judge advocate with the U.S. Navy. He served from 1980 to 1986, with tours in Washington, D.C., Newport, Rhode Island, the USS JOSEPH HEWES (FF1078), Charleston, South Carolina, and Atsugi, Japan. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal and received commendations from various Japanese Government agencies.

During his tour in Charleston, Steve was assigned trial counsel duties — prosecuting and defending general and special courts-martial, including contested capital trials. Steve also served as a member of the base commander’s personal legal staff, dealing with a broad range of civil and criminal matters.

At the U.S. Naval Facility in Atsugi, Steve was the primary legal advisor for the base commander. He was designated by the U.S. Ambassador to Japan to act as an official liaison to the Japanese government on criminal and civil issues. Steve was also the senior watch officer for the base.

Service to the community

After joining the firm in December 1987, Steve quickly developed an active and large Ohio and Kentucky workers’ compensation practice serving injured workers in both states. Drawing on his trial experience learned during his naval service, Steve began litigating contested personal injury and workers’ compensation claims. Shortly thereafter, Steve expanded his practice to include Social Security disability claims, first as an adjunct to his workers’ compensation practice and then to include disability claimants in general.

Because of his extensive knowledge, Steve has frequently been invited to speak at state-wide seminars and was asked to testify before legislative committees as an Ohio State Bar Association representative. Steve has also written columns for local and statewide newspapers and published articles in the local bar journal.

In 1995, the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine recruited Steve to join the faculty of the Environmental Medicine Department as a volunteer assistant professor of medicine, teaching residents about the legal ramifications of their medical practices.

A life-long Ohio resident, Steve graduated from Western Hills High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from THE Ohio State University and law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law. He has remained a devoted member of the community he serves.

On April 1, 2022, Steve retired from the active practice of law.  He continues to provide assistance to the firm on a part time/as needed basis.
